Chris Woodhouse was born in England, and during his teenage years was a keen amateur photographer. After receiving an M.Eng. in Electronics at Bath University, he designed communication and optical gauging equipment before joining an automotive company. His traditional monochrome photography earned him an Associateship distinction from the Royal Photographic Society. After the publication of the first edition of The Astrophotography Manual and astronomy-related activities, he was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He has pursued his passion for all forms of photography over the last 35 years and additionally invented and patented several unique darkroom timers and meters, which are sold throughout the world. He quickly found the technical challenges of astrophotography responded well to methodical and scienti?c methods, and together with his traditional photographic experience, he produces beautiful and fascinating images.

Sein erstes größeres Werk, das vielumstrittene «Wendekreis des Krebses», wurde – dank des Wagemuts eines Pariser Verlegers – erstmals 1934 in englischer Sprache herausgegeben. In den USA zog die Veröffentlichung eine Reihe von Prozessen nach sich; erst viel später wurde das Buch in den literarischen Kanon aufgenommen. Henry Miller starb am 7. Juni 1980 in Pacific Palisades, Kalifornien.

Der deutschstämmige New Yorker Schriftsteller gibt hier einen Abschnitt seines Lebens preis, der vor allem in den 30er Jahren spielt. In 10 Storys führt uns Miller in seine Welt ein. Das ist zum einen hochinteressant, manchmal aber auch eine zähe Wortspielerei. Miller erzählt von Dostojewski, er spricht über seine Jugend, er erklärt seine Malerei und schafft es, den Zauber von Paris anhand der dortigen Bedürfnisanstalten zu beschreiben. Miller nimmt uns mit in einen Schneiderladen und das Nachtleben. Am Ende zeigt er uns den Wahnsinn einer gigantischen Stadt. Das ist immer literarisch wertvoll, manchmal komisch, sehr oft erotisch und hin und wieder fast schon abstoßen. Henry Miller halt. Wenn sie Miller als Autor schätzen, kann ich ihnen -Schwarzer Frühling- ans Herz legen. Auch um den großen Schreiber kennen zu lernen, ist der Band geeignet.
